Hello, my name is Gato and I’m Bill’s pal. I’m an 18 pound Maine
Coon cat. I feel confident that I can tell you about Bill, because I have known him
ever since I was a kitten. I wake him up when the coffee starts brewing and we have
breakfast together every day. I love oatmeal, and so does he! I also love to sit next
to him when he is working on his computer. Ever since I met him, he has always been
working on something on his computer. First, it was a dissertation that he was doing
for the City University of New York while he taught high school in New Jersey. Then,
a year later he wrote a letter to a school called Wright State University in Ohio,
and a few months after that, I moved to Ohio. In 1997, Bill was preparing to teach
something called an on-line class and he prepared by taking one himself to help him
learn how to do something called “facilitating”. He says he learned that
cyberspace can be a lonely and uncomfortable place, but if facilitators use certain
techniques, the online environment can be a warm and engaging experience.
